A Family-Friendly Maritime Museum
The Maritime Museum offers many activities for children. Kids can unleash their creativity in the "Children's Maritime Workshop."
Inside the exhibitions, children can try sailor tattoos, navigate as a skipper in the trading game Sail & Trade, and learn sailor's knots and signal flags. The Maritime Museum offers free admission for children and young people up to the age of 15, including an activity booklet for discovering the museum's treasures, as well as free participation in the children's workshop. All activities for children and young people are available every day during the museum's opening hours.
For adult visitors, we offer several exciting exhibitions. The museum's main exhibition focuses on the age of sailing ships, telling the story of why Agder was Norway's most important maritime district in the 19th century — the highs and lows of the shipping industry, how sailing ships were built, how crews spent their time on board, how sailors mastered the sea, and the role of seafaring in times of war and conflict. The museum also has a dedicated exhibition about the war sailors of the Second World War, as well as an exhibition tracing the path to modern shipping, the shift of power from captain to shipowner, and the transition from sail to steam.
On the quay just outside the museum, we have a bathing ladder for those who fancy a dip, and in July the Bathing Boat stops here several times a week. Be sure to also visit our café for ice cream, soft drinks and cakes.
